WHY ADMINISTRATION?
In the summer of 2003, Matt Chrispin had the pleasure of having Jim Mahoney as an instructor for one of the classes his administrative classes. Vividly, he recalls Mahoney challenging his students by saying, “If you are one of those teachers who usually disagrees or complains about decisions made by your building principal or central office staff, then you need to get into the game.” He continued, “You either need to shut up or step up. Hopefully, you are in here because you’ve decided to step up and share your talents and ideas.” That was the determining moment for Chrispin to take the leap and become an administrator. He figured he had good ideas and the best way to put them to the test was to become an administrator.
LEADERSHIP STYLE
Being able to lead from the front of the line, the middle of the line, and from the back of the line is one of Matt Chrispin's greatest strengths. Depending on the situation, there are times one needs to be directive and authoritative. Other situations allow a leader to play a more collaborative role working along side teachers or other stakeholders to arrive at a decision. Then, there are other times where one assumes the role of the coach and allow others to grow their leadership by being out in front solving the problem. Situational leadership his strength. That type of leadership is needed for each given situation is critical for being a successful administrator.
